Foods to Avoid or Modify While Wearing Braces

Did you know that broken or missing appliances can actually increase the length of time spent in braces?  Some foods can also damage your permanent teeth and gums!  It's always best to use common sense, and err on the side of caution when wearing braces. Please refer to the lists below to avoid prolonging your treatment or compromising your dental health.  If you have questions about a particular food or drink, please call us first at 602-993-8800.  We're happy to assist you!

Foods to Avoid:

HARD AND STICKY FOODS may do damage by bending wires, loosening cement under the bands or breaking the brackets

EXAMPLES OF HARD FOODS
Nuts
Ice
Popcorn Kernels
Pizza Crust

EXAMPLES OF STICKY FOODS
Taffy
Caramels
Gummy Bears

Foods to Modify:

FOODS HIGH IN SUGAR CONTENT you should avoid whenever possible.  If you do eat or drink foods high in sugar, remember to brush your teeth immediately!  If it's not convenient to brush, then always rinse your mouth with clear water.

Foods such as carrot sticks or apples are okay to eat while in orthodontic treatment, but make sure to cut the foods into bite size pieces.  Biting into an apple, for example, can loosen your bracket.
